Weights are good but I would not do them while walking.
Do you have any exercise tapes?
I love the Tae Bo ones.
(when I am not in my off mode, which is always the month of December)
Building up muscle will help with your metabolism.

TaeBo is good and is something you can do in the privacy of your home. Also when you get to the level where you are comfortable of working out around others try Karate or even TaeBo at a gym somewhere. Its real easy to stay motivated when you start working towards goals and around other people doing the same thing. And it seems real easy to go to class when your paying for it. I credit most of my weight loss to Karate. Just getting your heart rate up doing anything with Phen though and your bound to loose weight.

I've never tried tae-bo, but it sounds great! I like to use weights. You can add a little umph to your walking by adding wrist or ankle weights (they strap on with velcro) or use hand weights in your home. I had a Denise Austin tape with four different 6 minute workouts. They each targeted a different area. One used hand weights and I really liked it. Find something you like and can stick with.

Be very cautious adding wrist weights to a walking regime. Weights over 3 lbs have been shown to raise blood pressure... also there is a risk of straining the arm and shoulder muscles. Ankle weights can stress the knees.
A better choice to intensify a walking workout is to walk at a faster pace or walk up an incline. My friend and I found a soap box derby hill to do laps on... *grin* now that is a workout!!
I've never used them, but I hear walking with poles (like a cross-country skier) is a new trend.
Have you ever tried dance classes. Aerobics and videos are boring because they're so repetitive. But in a dance class you're learning new movements for a purpose, which is more motivational. Actually, a ballet workout is one of the best... combining strength, balance and flexibility. Really, it's like fancy calisthenics with french names. Knee bends become plies and leg lifts become grand battements. At least it sounds more fun. LOL
Anyway... I hope everybody posts some exercise suggestions because I'm always looking for something new and fun!
Hey... does anyone have a bowflex?? My husband wants to get one, but I'm wondering if it's really as cool as the say on the commercials.

I have a taebo question, too. Can you start it out if you have not been working out at all? Like a total beginner? Or do you need to be in fair shape before you start taebo? More specifically, can a 216 pound woman start it without passing out?

Kim, try out the basics one. If your doc says its ok to exercize it should be fine. My husband and I both did the basic with no problem. You can always go slower until your up to doing the whole thing.

If you like walking and want to do a very simple exercise tape, try Leslie Sansone's Power Walk-3 Miles. She uses weighted gloves but 1 or 2 pound dumbells work just as well. It's very simple, but kind of fun too. Nothing complicated at all. The only thing is she doesn't add a stretch at the end so you're on your own.
I'm an exercise tape junkie and this is a really good beginner tape.

Leslie also has a one mile video, it has a strech segment at the end. It's my favorite exercise video. She has several good tapes on walking and fat burning. I order all her videos from a website called Collage Video.
