If you are on the Atkins diet ketosis is VERY VERY good, it means you are burning fat. The way to check for ketosis is through a testing strip called "Ketostix" that can be bought at a pharmacy, Walmart etc.
I'm sure at some point you've been checked at your Dr for ketosis when you gave a urine sample.
Ketosis can happen to Diabetics who don't have control of their blood sugar levels. That form is called Ketoacidosis and is VERY DANGEROUS. Ketosis is NOT the same thing (dispite what anti-lowcarb people say)
Dietary ketones happen either when someone is on a very low carbohydrate diet. When the body has burned all it's stored carbs which usually happens in 2 days it turns to stored fat for fuel, thus producing ketones. You also can go into ketosis from starving, it's the same idea although not a good idea. There is also a form called Alcoholic Ketoacidosis which like the name says, occurs in alcoholics. Pregnant women can also develope ketones, and depending on the amount and/or reason for it, it can be dangerous. Many pregnant women show "trace" ketones and that's normal.
